The more the board leans, the shorter your letter will be!Īfter all the letters are traced it’s time to cut them out! I recruited the help of my partner in crime to work the power tools! We used a table saw to cut out the big pieces and long straight lines! This helps make fast, straight cuts! We then also used a jig saw or reciprocating saw to cut out the smaller nooks and for the omega! If you have a band saw handy, that should also work well for the larger round cuts! Cutting with a reciprocating saw is definitely a two person job because the wood wanted to bounce around a lot during cuts so one person really had to hold it down while the other is cutting. Also make sure the angle that the board is leaning at is the same for all the boards. Note of caution: It is important that each of the letters has the exact same font size on your computer.
When I got them hom e, I propped them up against a wall, pulled out my family’s projector and projected the letters onto the board to trace. This also helped me to get the boards to fit inside my car! I had Lowes cut the board into 3 equal pieces for each of the letters in my sorority’s name, Sigma Alpha Omega. I personally would have liked to get a board that was ¼” thick, but I couldn’t find one that thin. You can get an 8’x4’ board for about 35 dollars from Lowes. I wanted something that was strong, but thin enough for the sisters to carry and prop up! I ended up going with ½” thick particle board.
The first thing to consider is the type of wood you are going to use. If you are in a sorority, it seems necessary to display your Greek letters everywhere! They are important to your identity as a sorority girl and must be on your car, on all your clothing, accessories, wall decorations and more! One thing that seems especially important is to have large Greek letters for displaying at events and taking pictures with! (Because we have to know which sorority this large group of girls squatting for a picture belongs to!) My chapter is pretty small so for the past two semesters I made our giant letters by cutting foam core board and then spray painting and glittering the heck out of them! This is my last semester in my chapter and I wanted to leave the sisters with some letters that would last them longer than a semester! It was time to make wooden letters! Now, I’ve searched for DIYs on how to make these wooden Greek letters and couldn’t find one anywhere! So I knew that when I made some, I would share my experience and wisdom with others!
