What devices like Kindles and Kobos (and Nooks fit in here as well) do- reading text-based books in mobi/epub (epub would have to be converted before being put on a kindle), and books bought from the integrated bookstores or borrowed from the library- they do well. It’s very barebones and kindles/Kobos don’t have a lot of speed/ processing power.
I also wouldn’t recommend regularly using the experimental browser on kindle or the similar browser on a Kobo (although Kobo has pocket integration which means you can send articles etc to your Kobo through that method). If you are reading a lot of PDFs you should look at either a large eink or a tablet. You would really have to consider at least a 7.8” if not 10” device for that (10”+ for regular PDF reading). PDFs aren’t a great experience on eink devices.
